Did you know that an estimated 20% of the population experiences bouts of depression at some point in their life? Those who experience major depressive disorder sometimes do not experience relief from their symptoms with medications and cognitive therapies. A new study examines the effects of Neurofeedback in conjuction with f-MRI in treating depression. With Neurofeedback, the patient is able to learn to regulate their emotional circuits themselves and then track the changes with f-MRI. The clinical symptoms of the depressed group were improved significantly compared to the control counterparts. The study, Real-Time Self-Regulation of Emotion Networks in Patients with Depression, was conducted at the Wales Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and published in PLoS ONE on June 4, 2012.
