Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation vs. Neurofeedback
Although stimulating the brain with electricity has refined itself in the last couple of decades, it is a scary thing to do- to zap brain with electricity. There may be memory problems that do not necessarily resolve. It also may cause brain damage. If you have funny brain of any kind such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), or birth trauma you probably should not do ECT.
TMS costs about $300 a session, and the treatment consists of three to four sessions per week for five to ten weeks. Insurance probably rarely covers the cost. It has about a 53% success rate, and I do not think it is permanent- but I could be corrected on that.
The reason I favor neurofeedback is that it trains the brain itself to correct itself over time. If you doing one or two sessions a week of neurofeedback for frontal lobe training, it will have a good chance of resetting the brain in a more permanent way. Although it takes longer, treatment is probably going to be more effective. It certainly has a better chance to be permanent.
We do neurofeedback at the Brain Clinic. If you have a medical disorder and you are interested in biofeedback treatment, it can be billed as part of a biofeedback regime or psychological intervention for medical disorder using the CPT code 96152.
