What Is Neuropsychological Testing for High-Stakes Exams?

Neuropsychological testing plays a key role in helping students and professionals qualify for accommodations on high-stakes exams such as the GRE, MCAT, LSAT, and GMAT. These evaluations provide an in-depth understanding of an individual’s cognitive, academic, and psychological functioning, ensuring that any documented challenges are properly supported during testing.

We provide comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations with one of the fastest turnaround times on the east coast. You can have your report in hand 10 days after testing is complete. Schedule a free consultation today.

What Is Neuropsychological Testing?

Neuropsychological testing uses standardized assessments designed to measure various cognitive abilities, including attention, memory, executive functioning, processing speed, and academic skills. An experienced clinician administers these tests and interprets their results. The findings of this assessment are included in a report which can then be submitted to testing associations for the MCAT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT, etc.

Why Is Neuropsychological Testing Needed for High-Stakes Exams?

Testing associations often require documented evidence of a disability to grant accommodations. Neuropsychological evaluations provide data-driven documentation for:

  • Identified challenges, including learning disorders, ADHD, and other conditions.
  • The impact of these challenges on test performance.
  • Tailored accommodations to the specific needs of the individual (e.g., extended time, a separate testing room, breaks).

Individuals may consider neuropsychological testing for high-stakes exams if they experience attentional challenges, processing speed deficits, executive functioning challenges, and/or anxiety

You may also consider seeking an evaluation if you have diagnosed or suspected ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia to identify the impact of these challenges and the appropriate accommodations.

The Process of Neuropsychological Testing

A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation typically involves:

  • Assessment Sessions. The clinician will gather developmental, academic, and medical history and administer cognitive, academic, and emotional assessments.
  • Written Report. The clinician will then provide you with a written report with diagnosis, test results, and recommendations for accommodations.
  • Feedback. You can review the findings and discuss next steps, including submitting documentation for accommodations.

If you or your child need accommodations for an upcoming high-stakes exam, a neuropsychological evaluation can be a critical step in securing the support you deserve. Contact The Brain Clinic to learn more or schedule a free consultation today.
